On this episode of Wheel of Fortune, College Week continued
as we met three brand new contestants, who hoped to win big on one of America's
favorite game-shows. Starting the show right off with a $1000 dollar Toss Up
puzzle-a puzzle in which letters are randomly given until a contestant is able
to guess the puzzle-the category was Person. Smoking his opponents, Derrick-one
of two male contestants, solved the puzzle “Graduate Assistant,” with only Two
T's, One N, One G and One S on the board.
Derrick
Chan is a senior at UNLV (the University of Las Vegas) whose studying to be an
elementary school teacher. The other male contestant, Enoch Newkirk is
attending Cornell and is majoring in Psychology. Courtney, the only female
contestant on today's game is attending Lee University, in small town
Cleveland, Tennessee (right outside of Chattanooga). She is an English
Education major who hopes to teach high school after she graduates this year.
Moving on to the second Toss Up Puzzle of the game, the
category was Rhyme Time, and Derrick once again stole the board early on with
“Rough and Tough,” to solve the puzzle. Lonely Planet once again sponsored a
wonderful trip to Athens, Greece, to put a great prize on the wheel.
The first spin puzzle was a Same Letter category. Derrick
started with the first spin, but failed to guess a letter on the board, with T.
Enoch then started his turn with a spin that left him with half of a Chevrolet
Sonic, and some cash. Buying the vowel E, of which there weren't any, left the
field open for Courtney to play. She landed on the dreaded Bankrupt to turn the
game over to Derrick once again. Scoring big on the letter C, which was the
common letter between the three words; gave Derrick quite a cushion to buy the
vowel A, of which there were also three.
Derrick was doing well until he guessed the letter R which wasn't
available. Enoch took full advantage of his near miss with the Bankrupt game
piece, and solved the puzzle with Clashing, Clanging, Cymbals.
Round 2 started off with a Phrase. Courtney was the first to
spin and ran with it. Calling letter after letter, and buying up all the
possible vowels, Courtney used her Wild Card-a card that let's her stay on the
game piece amount she's currently on, which was $3500 dollars. She guessed the
letter H-when she landed on the game piece originally, and the Letter N during
her wild card turn. This racked up her total to a very nice $10,500 just in
those three slots alone! Feeling the excitement of the puzzle, Courtney took
one more spin-for which she gained a ½ Car game piece, and finally-with a high
pitched squeal, solved the puzzle. I Promise To Call You When I Land.
The next Toss Up-a Phrase-worth $3000 dollars was a What Are
You Doing puzzle. Derrick scored on this round with the correct answer, Hitting
The Gym. Hearing the bell for the Final Spin, Pat Sajak got the consonants to a
nice $1500 a piece for the contestants to build their winnings. Derrick started
the Thing puzzle off with the letter T, and found there were 4 of them. Derrick
scored again by solving the puzzle with The Latest Technology, landing him in a
very close second place. Enoch walked away with a little cash. Courtney was the
big winner-fresh off her last spin round sweep-who stuck around for the bonus
round. With not a lot of help from the letters she was given, or those she
picked; Courtney wasn't able to solve the final puzzle-Having An Impact. She
did, however, walk away with a nice sum of $21,849.
